The Benedictine Abbey of Disentis, above the town of Disentis/Mustér (see separate entry), is located approximately 9.5 km northeast of Andermatt. It is believed that the abbey was founded in the early 8th century and was, in medieval times, the cultural and political centre of the region; it was almost completely rebuilt in Baroque style in the late 17th century. It is still a religious community and a highly regarded secondary school and has survived ransacking and burning by Napoleon’s troops in 1799. The abbey church of St Martin dates from 1696-1712 and there is also a museum.
