Located between the River Aare and Dählhölzli Forest, the city’s Dählhölzli Zoo is an ideal place for a family outing. Opened in 1937 and spread over 16 hectares (about 40 acres), there are more than 200 different animal species and a pet zoo and playground. The emphasis is on a natural environment and the zoo has an international reputation for breeding endangered species. Amongst the unusual inhabitants are the basilisk lizard, musk ox and arctic fox and the Vivarium is a feature, however the largest part of the park is dedicated to the local wildlife and fauna of the alpine region.
