The city of Delémont, with a population of around 11,300, is the capital of the Swiss canton of Jura. The area was settled in the Bronze Age and Delémont was first mentioned in records in 737 as Delemonte. The city has two 18th century city gates, the Porte au Loup (1775) and the Porte de Porrentruy (1756-59). It retains its medieval city outline and was awarded the Wakker Prize in 2006 for the preservation of its architectural heritage. Highlights include the Catholic church of Saint-Marcel dating from 1762-67, the Hôtel de Ville built in 1742-45 and its 16th century Renaissance fountains.
