Located next to the Espace Jean Tinguely (see separate entry), the Cordeliers Church was part of a Franciscan Friary founded in 1256. It contains some notable works of art including the choir stalls, which are the oldest in Switzerland, dating back to 1281. One of the main attractions is the 1481 altar piece above the main altar by the ‘Masters of the Carnation’, who signed their work with a red or white carnation. Other features include the predella, with a 1506 painting ‘The Death of the Usurer’ by Hans Fries, a 1513 carved and gilded triptych and a 1413 statue of Christ.
