Coppet Castle (near Geneva) was built at the end of the 17th century on the ruins of an existing 13th century stronghold. Some sections of the earlier fortress remain. The castle is situated in a stunning park overlooking Lake Geneva and was home to Mme de Staël, the daughter of Jacques Necker, Finance Minister to Louis XVI. She went into exile there due to her opposition to Napoleon. The Salon de l’Europe, the famous debating salon of the arts, literature and politics was founded by Mme de Staël. Since Necker’s time, the castle has been held by his descendants.
