Drawing on the collections of the Basel Kunstmuseum and the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation (see separate entries), the Museum für Gegenwartskunst concentrates on contemporary art works from about 1960 to the present day. Opened in 1980, the changing exhibitions features the work of artists such as the Germans Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) and Rosemarie Trockel (b.1952), the Americans Bruce Nauman (b.1941), Robert Gober (b.1954), Elizabeth Peyton (b.1965) and Matthew Barney (b.1967) and the Canadian Jeff Wall (b.1946). The museum also collects video art and stages special exhibitions and educational events, for both adults and children.
