Since it opened in 1918, the Kunsthalle has been dedicated to contemporary art and the trends of regional, national and international art; it has not been short of controversy. It stages six or seven one man or group exhibitions annually and organizes guided tours, lectures and debates. The Kunsthalle has established an international reputation with expositions by such artists as Paul Klee, Christo (Christo Vladimirov Javacheff) of wrapping fame, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, Jasper Johns and Sol LeWitt,. The thematic exhibitions of former curator Harald Szeemann, such as that of the works of the ‘mentally ill’ (1963), also attracted international attention.
