The Clock Tower is one of the best known sights in Berne and one of its most popular attractions. Originally Berne’s western city gate, dating from 1191-1256, it has through the ages been guard tower, prison, clock tower, center of urban life and civic memorial. After the great fire of 1405 the tower was rebuilt and given a bell and a mechanical clock and has been known as the Clock Tower ever since. The famous and ingenious ornate astronomical clock dates from 1530. Four minutes before the hour, mechanical figures are set in motion on the east face of the clock.
