The Chur Cathedral, built between 1151 and 1272, dominates the town; it is dedicated to the Assumption and is in late-Romanesque and Gothic style. The highlight of the richly decorated interior is the high altar (1486–92) by Jakob Russ; the depiction of the crucifixion was carved in situ and the artist incorporated a tiny self-portrait into a crescent moon, just behind the crucifix at eyelevel. Other features include the four carved stone figures of the Apostles in the crypt, dating from around 1200, and the tiny gallery which is one end of a secret passage from the bishop’s palace next door.
