The Château d’Aigle was built at the end of the 12th century, by the family of the Knights of Aigle. When first constructed, it was only a strengthened tower, but very soon afterwards it was reinforced with buildings and a wall. Partially destroyed by fire in 1475, the castle was rebuilt and transformed at the end of 1480. The most outstanding element of the current castle, the square Tower, was built at that time to replace a round tower. Over the following centuries, the fortress was the residence of the Bernese Governors. From1804 to 1832 it was used as a hospital and now houses the Wine Museum (see separate entry).
