Chiasso, 7 km from Mendrisio, was a rural village, but is now a transport and border hub of activity. The village was documented as far back as 1127, when it fell under Como, although it existed long before as is evidenced by local Roman finds. It is situated in a valley, flanked by hills, and has long been a transit point and today is one of the customs border posts with Italy. Chiasso was home to the artists Valdani and Calvi, as well as the sculptors Baldassare Fontana and Antonio Soldini. There are many beautiful old buildings to visit dating back to the 16th Century.
