With more than 850 years of history, Kartause Ittingen, about 5 km northwest of Frauenfeld, is an important cultural site, which began as an Augustinian monastery around 1150. Sold to the Carthusian Order in 1461 and destroyed in the 16th century during the Reformation, it was subsequently rebuilt. Following the abolition of monasteries in the Thurgau in 1848 it became a farm until complete restoration during 1979-1983. Today, it houses the Ittingen and Thurgau Art museums (see separate entries), a hotel, a farm and serves various other functions.
