For many centuries Charmey, which is today a ski resort, was the centre of Gruyère cheese production which, up until the French revolution, was made in the summer and exported to France. The Charmey Museum, which is located about 12 km northeast of Gruyères, focuses on the cultural and social history of the area, displaying paintings, engravings, models and local handcraft objects related to the region, which attracted many mountaineers and painters at the beginning of the 20th century. The Valsainte room at the museum preserves and explores the world of the Carthusian monks who settled there in 1294.
