The village of Cazis, at an altitude of 659 metres, is located about 23 km southwest of Chur on the west bank of the Hinterrhein. The village has a population of around 1,500 and was first documented in 926 as Cacias; in 1942 the Bronze Age Cresta settlement, which is a Swiss heritage site, was discovered south of the village. Other heritage sites are the Romanesque St Wendelin Chapel and the catholic church of St Martin. Cazis is dominated by St Peter and St Paul’s Dominican Convent dating from 1504; the church has frescos in the choir.
