The Fribourg fortifications, consisting of two kilometers of ramparts, 14 towers and one large bulwark, form one of the most important examples of medieval military architecture in Switzerland. The Cats Tower (Tour des Chats) was built in the second half of the 16th century, against the oldest section of the wall. It is located on the right bank of the Sarine (Saane River), northwest of the interesting Place des Forgerons and close to the Berne Gate (see separate entry). The shell-like structure, named after its feline inhabitants, is open at the back; square on plan, it stands 33 metres high.
