The St. Pierre Cathedral belongs to the Swiss Reformed Church. Construction started in 1160 and lasted nearly a century. In the middle of the 16th century, the advent of the Reformation changed the interior of the building. All ornamentation was removed and the coloured decors whitewashed. Only the stained glass windows were spared. The cathedral is best known as the adopted home church of John Calvin, one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation. A trip up the 157 steps to the summit of the cathedral’s north tower is rewarded by a wonderful panorama over the city and the lake.
