The Berne Münster is Switzerland’s largest ecclesiastical building and the city’s most impressive example of late-Gothic architecture. The first church on this site is thought to have been a small late 12th century chapel, first referred to in 1224. Construction on the present cathedral started in 1421 under Matthäus Ensinger (c.1390-1463) and continued under successive builders for about 150 years. The 100 metre high tower, from which there is a fantastic view, was only completed in 1893. The Münster’s 10.5 ton bell dates from 1611. Berne became protestant early in the Reformation and many of the cathedrals’ treasures were destroyed around 1528.
