The Burgdorf Castle, located on a rocky outcrop, dominates the town and was built by the Dukes of Zähringen in the 12th century. It is well maintained and now houses the history museum, which was founded in 1886. The largest of the castles built by the Zähringens in Switzerland, it was sold to Berne in 1384. The museum brings to life the history of the town which grew around the castle and covers the period from the high Middle Ages to the present and personalities, such as Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) the Swiss educational reformer, who established a school here in 1798.
