Bellinzona’s three castles, consisting of Montebello, Sasso Corbaro (see separate entries) and Castelgrande, have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000. The present castle was built in various stages starting in the 13th century; it was enlarged in the period 1473-86. Restoration took place in the 17th and 19th centuries and the latest extensive works were carried out between 1984 and 1991. The 27-metre Torre Bianca and the square 28-metre Torre Negra are the oldest parts of the fortification. The castle can be reached on foot from the Via Orico, or by lift from the Piazzetta Della Valle.
