Displayed in a series of temporary exhibitions, the Cartoon and Caricature Museum has a collection of some 3,000 works from the 20th and 21st centuries. The works are by 700 artists, from 36 different countries and are shown in both thematic and monographic exhibitions. The museum was opened in 1979 by Basel caricaturist Jürg Spahr (1925-2002). It is housed in a late gothic period building, which was extended in 2005 by Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron. They were the winners of the Pritzker Prize in 2001 and added a new wing and remodelled the foyer and shop.
