Carouge is now a small suburb of Geneva, which developed after being granted to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1754. A city plan, designed by Turinese architects, ensured the village (as it was then) had an attractive checkerboard arrangement around an axis planted with trees (the Place du Marché). Houses were built with galleries in the rear opening on gardens. Carouge has retained its Mediterranean-like atmosphere with its bustling streets and secluded squares. Today the suburb boasts boutiques, antiques and curios dealers, and there are many excellent restaurants and bistros to tempt gourmets to dine.
