Combining the collections of the Fribourg monasteries and the Collège St-Michel, the library serves the dual function of a cantonal and university library. Founded in 1848, it maintains the printed and audio visual heritage of the Fribourg Canton. Its exhibitions on a wide range of themes, as varied as Middle Age manuscripts and contemporary photography, highlight this heritage for the wider public. It also hosts and promotes cultural activities which, together with its reading rooms, archives and media library, make it both a centre of student life and a focus of regional culture.
