Jean Calvin was a hard taskmaster at the college he created in 1559. Ten hours a day, six days a week, with only the Sabbath on which to rest, that was his strict teaching routine. His academy was to become world-renown and Théodore de Bèze, another illustrious figure of the Reformation, became the first rector. The academy continued to enjoy growing success and, in 1872, was established as a university. For many years, the Calvin College was the only school building in Geneva. Despite many transformations and restorations, it has preserved its well-deserved status and is now devoted to secondary education.
