The Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, downstream from the Coulouvrenière Bridge, is a solid, enormous Beaux-Arts style building. A former power plant, built in 1886, and which operated until the end of the 1980s, this was, for more than a century, a masterpiece of Geneva’s industry. In its former incarnation it provided thousands of households with drinking water and electricity, but it is now used as a cultural and artistic centre. The hall, which is devoted to the lyric arts, seats 985 and is unique. It has been called an opera on the water.
