Brienz has a population of around 3,000 and is surrounded by gorgeous scenery at the north-eastern end of Lake Brienz. Settled by the Alamanni around 700 AD, the first official town record dates from 1146. Brienz became a renowned woodcarving and wood sculpture centre and still has a Woodcarving School (established 1884) and numerous sculptures can be seen around the village. There are many paths and hiking trails and a delightful one-kilometre lake promenade which was rebuilt after a freak storm in 1990. The Swiss writer Heinrich Federer (1866-1928) was born in a house beside the Protestant Church (see separate entry).
