Büren an der Aare is a town with a population of around 3,250, located some 13 km northeast of Biel between the River Aare and forests, at an altitude of 443 metres above sea level. The town has many fine old buildings and places of interest, in particular the provincial governor’s castle which dates from 1620 and was restored in 2003 and the c.1500 town hall, renovated and restored to its original use in 1950-1953. Other attractions include St Catherine’s church with origins in the 12th century, an attractive fountain, the Spittel Museum and the landmark timber bridge.
