Now located adjacent to St Nicholas Cathedral, the Bravery Fountain was first referred to in 1394 and, until 1840, stood in front of the old town hall in the cattle market. The present twelve-sided basin dates from 1840, but one of its panels is inscribed with the date of an earlier 1584 basin. Bravery is symbolised by a man in armour, sword in hand, with a snarling lion at his feet. The column is decorated with garlands, skulls and hourglasses, whilst the capital has musical cherubs and grotesque masks.
