The village of Bourguillon lies some 3 km east of Fribourg and the Bourguillon Gate was built in the middle of the 14th century to bar access to what is known as the Maigrauge Loop. This area is formed by the bend in the Saane River and contains the L’Abbaye de la Maigrauge and the Montorge Capuchin Convent. The gate tower was raised to a height of 14 metres at the end of the 16th century and is one of the best places from which to view Fribourg.
