The building in Aeschenplatz, completed in 1994 for UBS and sold in 1998 to BIS (the Bank of International Settlements), is an interesting example of the many fine modern buildings erected in Basel. It was designed by the renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta, who was born in 1943 in Mendrisio in the Ticino canton and was also responsible for the Tinguely Museum in Basel (see separate entry). Using the half circle design, often favoured by Botta in his designs, its two-tone striped stone cladding makes it immediately noticeable. The building has six storeys above ground and a further six below.
