Birsköpfli, near the Schwarzwaldbrücke, is one of a number of attractive swimming locations on the River Rhine around Basel; entry is free and it is deservedly popular. It is situated at the confluence of the Birs and the Rhine, where Switzerland’s first cable-stayed bridge was built across the Birs River in 1963. It had to be demolished in 2007 and the temporary wooden bridge will remain until completion of the new permanent structure in 2010. There are plenty of grassed sunbathing areas with shade, a children’s playground, beach volleyball court and games areas. Facilities include a restaurant, kiosk, showers and toilets.
