Biel/Bienne is a city of some 51,000 people, where both French and German are treated equally. It is located at the northern end of the Bielersee and the foot of the first mountain range of the Jura Mountains. Most visitors expect to find a 19th century industrial city, but it has a well preserved and charming medieval old town, with a 15th century gothic church, guild halls and decorated fountains. Restaurants of character help to make it a delight to stroll. Biel also has a lively new town in proximity to the further lakes of Neuchâtel and Murten-Morat.
