One of Geneva’s oldest institutions, the Geneva Library owes its existence to the Reformation and the foundation, in 1559, of the Academy by Jean Calvin. At first housed within the walls of the Collège Calvin, it was moved in 1872 to a wing of the university in Bastions Park. Containing approximately 54 kilometres of bookshelves housing two million documents, over 50,000 etchings, drawings and photos, nearly 100,000 posters, most of the books printed in Geneva since the 15th century, an outstanding collection of manuscripts by persons of renown, as well as a virtually complete collection of the Geneva press, this collection is without equal.
