The collection of art gallery owners Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, consisting of some 200 works of classic modernism, have been on permanent display since 1997, in a building designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano (b.1937). Piano, winner of the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 1998, has an international reputation and with Richard Rogers designed the Pompidou centre in Paris. The collection includes works by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Francis Bacon, which are displayed with tribal art from Africa, Oceania and Alaska. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions which complement the collection.
