Said to be the world’s largest nativity crib, the Bethlehem Diorama tells the story of the prophecy, the birth of Jesus, the arrival of the three kings and the flight into Egypt. The crib is built in a semicircle and has more than 450 carved wooden figures, wearing oriental costumes and 80m ² of plastic landscape created by the sculptor Reinhold Zellner of Munich. The background, which is more than 30 metres long, was painted by Bartholomew Wappmannsberger of Prien/Chiemsee. The crib was created in 1954, when the wooden figures made by crib maker Ferdinand Pöttmesser were purchased.
