On the town side of the Spalentor gate is a blue letter box with the emblem of a dove below, there are six of these decorative letterboxes still in use. Designed by the famous Basel architect Melchior Berri (1801-1854), they came into use in 1845 together with a postage stamp, also designed by Berri. Utilising the same dove motif with a letter in its beak, this stamp is known as the ‘Basler Dybli’ (Dove of Basel). It was the first multi-coloured stamp in the world and is extremely rare and valuable and was only valid for use until 30th September 1854.
