Whilst there are University buildings (dating from 1899-1930) in various places in Berne, the main building is located northwest of the Grosse Schanze (see separate entry). The University was founded in 1834 and there is a monument in front to Albrecht von Haller (1708-77), one of the 18th century’s greatest anatomists and physiologists, who was also a poet and was born in Berne. To the left is the headquarters of the Swiss Federal Railways. Further left over Schanzenstrasse is the Supreme Court (Obergericht), which dates from 1909, with the Uni S building, a former elderly ladies hospital rebuilt in 2005, behind.
