The impressive Berne Gate (Porte de Berne) is on the right bank of the Sarine (Saane River) and in the same section of the old fortified wall as the Cats Tower (see separate entry). The gate is also close to the Place des Forgerons with its famous Loyalty Fountain. Built between 1270 and 1290, it was heightened in the 1380s and again in the early part of the 15th century. Square on plan and 24 metres high, the original doors have been preserved, together with parts of the drawbridge. There is a winding staircase around the exterior.
