The fountain known as Bernabrunnen is located in front of the west wing of the Federal Palace (Bunderhaus) and is in contrast to the famous 16th century Hans Gieng fountains in the city; it dates from the 19th century. The bronze statue is of Bernadette, the symbol of Berne, and is the work of locally born sculptor Raphael Christen (1811-1880). The fountain was started in 1858 and inaugurated in 1863. The allegorical lion heads and the four swans on the plinths are in cast iron and, together with the spouts, have been subject to some remedial work.
