The pretty Berne Bridge across the River Sarine in Fribourg is a landmark and an ever popular Fribourg tourist attraction; it is the city’s only remaining wooden bridge. The original 13th century structure was built about a century after the city’s foundation in 1157 and the 40-metre long covered bridge has been continually renovated. The present structure with its stone centre arch is Baroque in style and dates from 1653. A short distance away is the square Berne Gate 24 metres high; built between 1270 and 1290, it still has its original doors.
