The bronze monument in Fontana Park is a memorial to the legendary hero Benedikt Fontana, who died in the battle of Calven Gorge in 1499. This battle, at which the free federation of the Three Leagues of the Grisons defeated the Habsburg army of King Maximilian I, was crucial in the Swabian War. The monument was completed in 1903 and is the work of leading Swiss sculptor, Richard Kissling (1848-1919). He was responsible for many major public works, including the 1899 memorial to railway pioneer Alfred Escher outside the main Zurich railway station.
