Belp is a town of some 10,000 inhabitants located about 9.5 km southeast of Berne. On the way there, at Kehrsatz, is a 16th century schloss which is now a state girl’s reformatory and in the lovely Gürbe valley on the left, the Schloss Oberried is now used as a boys’ school. The town is at the foot of the Belpburg, which is at an altitude of 894 metres above sea level and was first mentioned in 1263 as Belpo. It has an attractive 16th century castle and Gothic frescos dating from 1455-1460 in St Peter and St Paul’s church.
