Bellinzona, located to the east of the Ticino River with a population of around 17,500, is the canton capital. Although the region has been inhabited since early Neolithic times, the first fortification was only built in the first century BC; Bellinzona is now famous for its three castles (see separate entries). Features, in addition to the attractions separately listed, include the children’s museum (Museo in Erba), the Centro d’Arte Contemporanea with its exhibitions of modern art, and the five day Rabadan carnival. The piazzas Teatro, Governo, del Sole and Nosetto are popular centres for visitors, as is the Saturday market.
