The village of Bellelay lies some 24 km southwest of Delémont and has a former Premonstratensian abbey whose 18th century Baroque buildings are now used as a psychiatric clinic. The abbey was founded in the 12th century and, although the buildings were ransacked in 1499 during the Swabian War, it became a renowned school for the nobility. Occupied in 1797 by French troops, it was secularised and its treasures sold. The buildings were used as a watch factory, a brewery and finally as a glass factory until 1890, when the Berne Canton acquired the complex.
