Beatenberg, located about 11 km northwest of Interlaken, beneath the Niederhorn and high above Lake Thun, has a population of about 1,250 and is famed for its scenic beauty and views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It is linked to Beatenbucht on Lake Thun by the Thunersee-Beatenberg Bahn funicular, which connects with lake shipping services. In the immediate Beatenberg vicinity there are 30 km of walking trails and skiers have the use of five lifts serving 10 pistes, including a chairlift to the to Niederhorn at 1,950 metres. The St Beatus caves (see entry under Interlaken) are a major attraction.
