Tradition has it that Berne got its name from a bear killed by the city founder on the Aare peninsula (from the German for bear ‘Bär’) and the bear features on the city’s coat of arms. The present pit, near the Nydeggbrücke (see separate entry), was opened in 1857 and is in the process of being transformed and greatly extended into a 6,000 square metre park, scheduled to open in October 2009. The new park will enable the bears to climb, fish, play, swim in a large pool and also have shelter from public view. The present facility will remain open.
