Bastions Park was Geneva’s first botanical garden. It was founded by A. P. de Candolle in 1817. Today it is a beautiful promenade in the heart of the city and is embellished with monuments, fountains and statues all along its shady walks. There are still over fifty rare varieties of trees in the park. See separate entries for: The Reformation Wall, the Palais Eynard (a 19th century private residence, currently used as the Town Hall) and the University of Geneva. There is a pavilion-restaurant for refreshments and, for amusement, a life-sized chess and checker game area. This is one of Geneva’s favourite meeting places.
