The Basilica of Notre-Dame came into being when, in 1850, the city elected to allow the Catholic Church use of a piece of land belonging to earlier fortifications. The construction lasted from 1852 to 1857 and was financed almost entirely by the joint efforts of Catholic circles. Built completely of sandstone on the site of the Cornavin bastion, its architecture was inspired by the 12th century classic Gothic style and to a great extent, by the cathedral at Amiens. The latest restorations were completed in 1981.
