Known locally as Zolli and opened in 1874, the Basel Zoo is one of the great zoos of the world and one of Switzerland’s most popular attractions. Covering around 11 hectares (28 acres), it has approximately 6,000 animals of some 600 different species and is famous for breeding rhinoceros and endangered species. Highlights include the Etosha House, which transports you to Namibia, the dwarf hippopotami, the aviary, the bear enclosure and the Somali wild donkeys. There is an excellent monkey house, and elephants give children a ride as well as performing in the arena. The oddly shaped vivarium is another top attraction.
