The Stadttheater in Basel occupies a site with the Kunsthalle, the Architectural Museum and the Tinguely Carnival Fountain (see separate entries). The present building is the fourth theatre constructed and was opened in 1975. It is an irregular shape with a curved roof and is home to the citys opera and ballet companies; it also stages plays and musicals. Founded in 1834 as the Basler Stadttheater, the initial theatre was designed by the well known Swiss architect Melchior Berri (1801-1854). A second theatre opened in 1875, was destroyed by fire in 1904 and the third was opened in 1909.
