Located behind the Elisabethenschanze, with its massive ‘Switzerland Succoring Strasbourg’ monument by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), Basel’s main Railway Station is a registered heritage site of national significance. It was built in the period 1905-1909 by the architects Emil Faesch and Emanuel La Roche and its outstanding feature is the impressive Neo-baroque façade framed by two domed towers. Outside the station is the Centralbahnplatz, which is a major hub of the Basel tram network, surrounded by grand hotels and the Bank for International Settlements Tower (BIS) Building. This was designed by architect Martin Burckhardt (1921-2007) and built in the period 1972-1976.
